How to manage water leaks

Whilst a  water leak can be a costly repair and one we all dread, not all water leaks are immediately obvious. Sometimes a leak can be present for a while before you become aware, and it may take a sharp increase in your water bill or a quietly persistent noise of running water, that you can’t quite place, that alerts you to the probability of a problem with your plumbing.

If the leak is from an obvious source and is likely to cause property damage, it’s best to isolate the water supply immediately if possible, to limit the damage, before calling our qualified emergency plumber on 0420102345 to assist with repairs.

Some of the most common visible water leaks are from taps, sink mixers and shower heads, dripping water from joins in pipes or hoses, as well as leaks from toilet cisterns. Some of these leaks you may feel confident in fixing yourself, such as tap washers or washing machine hoses, whilst others can be tricky. They may require diagnosis by someone with the specialised knowledge and equipment for detection and rectification to fix the problem.

Faulty hot water systems can also result in water leaks. This can range from faulty valves to rusty or corroded tanks. Regular service can maintain the health of your system and avoid emergency repairs or replacement.

Cracked or burst pipes underground, under the house or inside walls aren’t always noticeable straight away, and often only become when there is significant damage. If you suspect you may have a concealed leak there are some simple checks you can do to confirm it one way or the other.

Firstly, turn off all taps or water sources to your property so that no water should be flowing. Next, go to your water meter, usually located at the front of your property, and check to see if the numbers on the meter are moving or ‘ticking over’. If they are ticking over, this would indicate that water is flowing somewhere in your pipeline.

If so, turn the water off to your property at the water meter and call our qualified emergency plumber on 0420102345. Our plumbers have the technology and skill to confidently determine the cause of your leaks and remedy the situation as quickly and efficiently, with the peace of mind of knowing the leak has been fixed by an expert.
